Vasco SC inflict relegation on Velsao SCC; Guardian Angel ease past Panjim Footballers in GPL

Skipper Cavin Lobo and Altamash Sayed's second half goals saved the season for the Port Towners.


Vasco Sports Club survived the relegation following a 2-1 win over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in a must win match of the Goa Professional League played at Nagoa Panchayat Ground on Wednesday evening. The defeat resulted in relegation of Velsao from the GPL.


Meanwhile, at the other venue, Guardian Angel SC also secured a 3-1 win over Panjim Footballers at Duler Stadium.


The result meant Velsao finished at the bottom with 11 points, while Panjim Footballers stayed afloat securing 12 points. Vasco SC, who were rooted at the bottom finished third in the relegation league with 13 points while Guardian Angel SC pulled off a stunning run in the final few games to secure their safety and to enjoy another season in the top flight.


Wednesday's clash could have seen any team get relegated and both the games were played simultaneously. At Nagoa, till the hour mark, it looked like Vasco SC would be relegated, however, Cavin Lobo had other plans, as he slammed home to give his side a crucial lead.


Once up by a goal, the Port Towners looked even more confident and secured their safety in the league through Altamash Sayed, who scored his third goal of the season to give Vasco SC an advantage.


Velsao SCC pulled a goal back in the 90th minute through Meuton Fernandes. The youngster had a terrific campaign scoring eight goals to finish second on the top scorers chart. However, the super league clubs have a game in hand.


At Duler, Guardian Angel SC’s Joel Baretto scored twice in the first quarter of the game to give Guardian Angel a perfect start. Bamba Musah then inflated the tally to three goals in the 23rd minute. The winners led 3-0 at the break.


In the second half, Guardian Angel SC were reduced to 10 men after Mohammed Mahama was sent off with a straight red in the 73rd minute. Panjim Footballers failed to take advantage despite managing to score a late goal through Doyal Alves, who coolly converted the spot kick.
